Bio​

Ordained a priest on April 27, 1980, for the Diocese of Vicenza, Cardinal Pietro Parolin began his diplomatic career in the service of the Holy See in 1986, after earning a degree in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University and a diploma in Diplomatic Sciences from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. He served in the nunciatures in Nigeria and Mexico, gaining extensive experience in international relations.
In 2002, he was appointed Under-Secretary for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State, a position he held until 2009. Subsequently, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela and Titular Archbishop of Acquapendente. On August 31, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Secretary of State, a role he currently holds. He was created a cardinal in the consistory of February 22, 2014.
